The Real Story of the von Trapp Family By Joan Gearin

source: http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2005/winter/von-trapps.html

Maria von Trapp, photograph from her Declaration of Intention, dated January 21, 1944. (Records of District Courts of the United States, RG 21)

I first saw the movie The Sound of Music as a young child, probably in the late 1960s. I liked the singing, and Maria was so pretty and kind! As I grew older, more aware of world history, and saturated by viewing the movie at least once yearly, I was struck and annoyed by the somewhat sanitized story of the von Trapp family it told, as well as the bad 1960s hairdos and costumes. "It's not historically accurate!" I'd protest, a small archivist in the making. In the early 1970s I saw Maria von Trapp herself on Dinah Shore's television show, and boy, was she not like the Julie Andrews version of Maria! She didn't look like Julie, and she came across as a true force of nature. In thinking about the fictionalized movie version of Maria von Trapp as compared to this very real Maria von Trapp, I came to realize that the story of the von Trapp family was probably something closer to human, and therefore much more interesting, than the movie led me to believe.

Part of the story of the real von Trapp family can be found in the records of the National Archives. When they fled the Nazi regime in Austria, the von Trapps traveled to America. Their entry into the United States and their subsequent applications for citizenship are documented in the holdings of the National Archives and Records Administration.

Fact from Fiction

While The Sound of Music was generally based on the first section of Maria's book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers (published in 1949), there were many alterations and omissions.

  • Maria came to the von Trapp family in 1926 as a tutor for one of the children, Maria, who was recovering from scarlet fever, not as governess to all the children.

  • Maria and Georg married in 1927, 11 years before the family left Austria, not right before the Nazi takeover of Austria.

  • Maria did not marry Georg von Trapp because she was in love with him. As she said in her autobiography Maria, she fell in love with the children at first sight, not their father. When he asked her to marry him, she was not sure if she should abandon her religious calling but was advised by the nuns to do God's will and marry Georg. "I really and truly was not in love. I liked him but didn't love him. However, I loved the children, so in a way I really married the children. . . . [B]y and by I learned to love him more than I have ever loved before or after."

  • There were 10, not 7 von Trapp children.

  • The names, ages, and sexes of the children were changed.

  • The family was musically inclined before Maria arrived, but she did teach them to sing madrigals.

  • Georg, far from being the detached, cold-blooded patriarch of the family who disapproved of music, as portrayed in the first half of The Sound of Music, was actually a gentle, warmhearted parent who enjoyed musical activities with his family. While this change in his character might have made for a better story in emphasizing Maria's healing effect on the von Trapps, it distressed his family greatly.

  • The family did not secretly escape over the Alps to freedom in Switzerland, carrying their suitcases and musical instruments. As daughter Maria said in a 2003 interview printed in Opera News, "We did tell people that we were going to America to sing. And we did not climb over mountains with all our heavy suitcases and instruments. We left by train, pretending nothing."
  • The von Trapps traveled to Italy, not Switzerland. Georg was born in Zadar (now in Croatia), which at that time was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Zadar became part of Italy in 1920, and Georg was thus an Italian citizen, and his wife and children as well. The family had a contract with an American booking agent when they left Austria. They contacted the agent from Italy and requested fare to America.

  • Instead of the fictional Max Detweiler, pushy music promoter, the von Trapps' priest, the Reverend Franz Wasner, acted as their musical director for over 20 years.
  • Though she was a caring and loving person, Maria wasn't always as sweet as the fictional Maria. She tended to erupt in angry outbursts consisting of yelling, throwing things, and slamming doors. Her feelings would immediately be relieved and good humor restored, while other family members, particularly her husband, found it less easy to recover. In her 2003 interview, the younger Maria confirmed that her stepmother "had a terrible temper. . . . And from one moment to the next, you didn't know what hit her. We were not used to this. But we took it like a thunderstorm that would pass, because the next minute she could be very nice."

The Real von Trapps

Georg von Trapp, born in 1880, became a national hero as a captain in the Austrian navy during World War I. He commanded submarines with valor and received the title of "Ritter" (the equivalent of the British baronet or "Sir," but commonly translated as "Baron") as a reward for his heroic accomplishments. Georg married Agathe Whitehead, the granddaughter of Robert Whitehead, the inventor of the torpedo, in 1912. They had seven children together: Rupert, 1911–1992; Agathe, 1913– ; Maria, 1914– ; Werner, 1915– ; Hedwig, 1917–1972; Johanna, 1919–1994; and Martina, 1921–1952. After World War I, Austria lost all of its seaports, and Georg retired from the navy. His wife died in 1922 of scarlet fever. The family was devastated by her death and unable to bear living in a place where they had been so happy, Georg sold his property in Pola (now Pula, Croatia) and bought an estate in Salzburg.

Maria Augusta Kutschera was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1905. She was orphaned as a young child and was raised as an atheist and socialist by an abusive relative. While attending the State Teachers' College of Progressive Education in Vienna, she accidentally attended a Palm Sunday service, believing it to be a concert of Bach music, where a priest was speaking. Years later she recalled in her autobiography Maria, "Now I had heard from my uncle that all of these Bible stories were inventions and old legends, and that there wasn't a word of truth in them. But the way this man talked just swept me off my feet. I was completely overwhelmed." Soon after, Maria graduated from college, and as a result of her religious awakening, she entered the Benedictine Abbey of Nonnberg in Salzburg as a novice. While she struggled with the unaccustomed rules and discipline, she considered that "These . . . two years were really necessary to get my twisted character and my overgrown self-will cut down to size."

However, her health suffered from not getting the exercise and fresh air to which she was accustomed. When Georg von Trapp approached the Reverend Mother of the Abbey seeking a teacher for his sick daughter, Maria was chosen, partly because of her training and skill as a teacher, but also because of concern for her health. She was supposed to remain with the von Trapps for 10 months, at the end of which she would formally enter the convent.

Maria tutored young Maria and developed a caring and loving relationship with all the children. She enjoyed singing with them and getting them involved in outdoor activities. During this time, Georg fell in love with Maria and asked her to stay with him and become a second mother to his children. Of his proposal, Maria said, "God must have made him word it that way because if he had only asked me to marry him I might not have said yes." Maria Kutschera and Georg von Trapp married in 1927. They had three children together: Rosmarie, 1928– ; Eleonore, 1931– ; and Johannes, 1939–.

The family lost most of its wealth through the worldwide depression when their bank failed in the early 1930s. Maria tightened belts all around by dismissing most of the servants and taking in boarders. It was around this time that they began considering making the family hobby of singing into a profession. Georg was reluctant for the family to perform in public, "but accepted it as God's will that they sing for others," daughter Eleonore said in a 1978 Washington Post interview. "It almost hurt him to have his family onstage, not from a snobbish view, but more from a protective one." As depicted in The Sound of Music, the family won first place in the Salzburg Music Festival in 1936 and became successful, singing Renaissance and Baroque music, madrigals, and folk songs all across Europe.

When the Nazis annexed Austria in 1938, the von Trapps realized that they were on thin ice with a regime they abhorred. Georg not only refused to fly the Nazi flag on their house, but he also declined a naval command and a request to sing at Hitler's birthday party. They were also becoming aware of the Nazis' anti-religious propaganda and policies, the pervasive fear that those around them could be acting as spies for the Nazis, and the brainwashing of children against their parents. They weighed staying in Austria and taking advantage of the enticements the Nazis were offering—greater fame as a singing group, a medical doctor's position for Rupert, and a renewed naval career for Georg—against leaving behind everything they knew—their friends, family, estate, and all their possessions. They decided that they could not compromise their principles and left.

Traveling with their musical conductor, Rev. Franz Wasner, and secretary, Martha Zochbauer, they went by train to Italy in June, later to London, and by September were on a ship to New York to begin a concert tour in Pennsylvania. Son Johannes was born in January 1939 in Philadelphia.

When their six months visitors' visas expired, they went on a short Scandinavian tour and returned to New York in October 1939. They were held at Ellis Island for investigation by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, apparently because when asked by an official how long they intended to stay, instead of saying "six months," as specified on their visas, Maria exclaimed, "Oh, I am so glad to be here—I never want to leave again!" The Story of the Trapp Family Singers notes that they were released after a few days and began their next tour.

This record of aliens held for special inquiry, dated October 7, 1939, notes that the family was to clear up confusion about the von Trapps' status. (Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, RG 85)

In the early 1940s the family settled in Stowe, Vermont, where they bought a farm. They ran a music camp on the property when they were not on tour. In 1944, Maria and her stepdaughters Johanna, Martina, Maria, Hedwig, and Agathe applied for U.S. citizenship by filing declarations of intention at the U.S. District Court in Burlington, Vermont. Georg apparently never filed to become a citizen; Rupert and Werner were naturalized while serving in the U.S. armed forces during World War II; Rosmarie and Eleonore derived citizenship from their mother; and Johannes was born in the United States and was a citizen in his own right.

Maria von Trapp's Declaration of Intention to become a U.S. citizen. (Records of District Courts of the United States, RG 21)

Georg died in 1947 and was buried in the family cemetery on the property. Those who had applied for citizenship achieved it in 1948. The Trapp Family Lodge (which is still operating today) opened to guests in 1950. While fame and success continued for the Trapp Family Singers, they decided to stop touring in 1955. The group consisted mostly of non-family members because many of the von Trapps wanted to pursue other endeavors, and only Maria's iron will had kept the group together for so long.

In 1956, Maria, Johannes, Rosmarie, and daughter Maria went to New Guinea to do missionary work. Later, Maria ran the Trapp Family Lodge for many years. Of the children, Rupert was a medical doctor; Agathe was kindergarten teacher in Maryland; Maria was a missionary in New Guinea for 30 years; Werner was a farmer; Hedwig taught music; Johanna married and eventually returned to live in Austria; Martina married and died in childbirth; Rosmarie and Eleonore both settled in Vermont; and Johannes managed the Trapp Family Lodge. Maria died in 1987 and was buried alongside Georg and Martina.

The von Trapps and The Sound of Music

The von Trapps never saw much of the huge profits The Sound of Music made. Maria sold the film rights to German producers and inadvertently signed away her rights in the process. The resulting films, Die Trapp-Familie (1956), and a sequel, Die Trapp-Familie in Amerika (1958), were quite successful. The American rights were bought from the German producers. The family had very little input in either the play or the movie The Sound of Music. As a courtesy, the producers of the play listened to some of Maria's suggestions, but no substantive contributions were accepted.

How did the von Trapps feel about The Sound of Music? While Maria was grateful that there wasn't any extreme revision of the story she wrote in The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, and that she herself was represented fairly accurately (although Mary Martin and Julie Andrews "were too gentle-like girls out of Bryn Mawr," she told the Washington Post in 1978), she wasn't pleased with the portrayal of her husband. The children's reactions were variations on a theme: irritation about being represented as people who only sang lightweight music, the simplification of the story, and the alterations to Georg von Trapp's personality. As Johannes von Trapp said in a 1998 New York Times interview, "it's not what my family was about. . . . [We were] about good taste, culture, all these wonderful upper-class standards that people make fun of in movies like 'Titanic.' We're about environmental sensitivity, artistic sensitivity. 'Sound of Music' simplifies everything. I think perhaps reality is at the same time less glamorous but more interesting than the myth."

* * *

Examining the historical record is helpful in separating fact from fiction, particularly in a case like the von Trapp family and The Sound of Music. In researching this article, I read Maria von Trapp's books, contemporary newspaper articles, and original documents, all of which clarified the difference between the von Trapps' real experiences and fictionalized accounts. My impression of Maria from Dinah Shore's show was the tip of a tantalizing iceberg: the real lives of real people are always more interesting than stories.

While the von Trapps' story is one of the better known immigrant experiences documented in the records of the National Archives and Records Administration, the family experiences of many Americans may also be found in census, naturalization, court, and other records.

Note on Sources

The National Archives and Records Administration, Northeast Region–Boston in Waltham, Massachusetts, holds the original records of the von Trapps' naturalizations as U.S. citizens. Declarations of intention, petitions for naturalization, and certificates of arrival are in Petitions and Records of Naturalization, U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont, Records of District Courts of the United States, Record Group (RG) 21. The passenger arrival list of the SS Bergensfjord and the Record of Aliens Held for Special Inquiry are in Passengers and Crew Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1897–1957 (National Archives Microfilm Publication T715), Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, RG 85, and are held in many National Archives locations.

Readers looking for a first-hand account of the family's story should consult Maria von Trapp's The Story of the Trapp Family Singers (Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1949) and her autobiography Maria (Carol Stream, IL: Creation House, 1972).

Interviews consulted for this article appeared in The Washington Post (Jennifer Small, "Apparently, Julie Andrews was too tame to do her justice"), February 26, 1978, p. Toothbrush Sales

The kids filed back into class Monday morning.

They were very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then share with the class how they were successful.

Little Mary led off, "I sold girl scout cookies and I made $30," she said proudly, "my sales approach was to appeal to the customer's civil spirit and I credit that approach for my success."

"Very good," said the teacher.

Little Sally was next, "I sold magazines," she said, "I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them abreast of current events."

"Very good, Sally," said the teacher.

Eventually, it was Little Johnny's turn. The teacher held her breath. Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher's desk. "$2,467" he said.

"$2,467!" cried the teacher, "What in the world were you selling?"

"Toothbrushes," said Little Johnny.

"Toothbrushes?" echoed the teacher, "How could you possibly sell enough toothbrushes to make that much money?"

"I found the busiest corner in town," said Little Johnny, "I set up a chocolate chip cookie stand and gave everybody who walked by a free sample.

They all said, “This tastes like MUD!" Then I replied, “It is. Wanna buy a toothbrush?"

Wisdom of Age

An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday evening with a beautiful young gal at his side. He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend.

The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring and showed it to him. The old man said, "I don't think you understand, I want something very special."

At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over.

"Here's a stunning ring at only $40,000," the jeweler said. The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, "We'll take it."

The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, by check. " I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I'll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon," he said.

Monday morning, a very teed-off jeweler phoned the old man. "There's no money in that account."

"I know", said the old man, "but can you imagine the weekend I had?"

San Francisco Zoo Tiger's Tatiana video

This video shows the tiger Tatiana which escaped San Francisco zoo killing 1 and injuring two on the Christmas day Authorities did not believe more people were attacked, but they wanted to inspect the area in the daylight. Zoo officials were still uncertain how long the Siberian tiger, the same one that mauled a zookeeper almost one year earlier, had been loose before being killed by police.

The three men who were attacked while visiting the zoo Tuesday were in their 20s, police spokesman Steve Mannina said. The attack occurred just after the 5 p.m. closing time, on the east end of the 125-acre grounds.

The zoo's director of animal care and conservation, Robert Jenkins, could not explain how Tatiana escaped. The tiger's enclosure is surrounded by a 15-foot-wide moat and 20-foot-high walls, and the approximately 300-pound female did not leave through an open door, he said.

"There was no way out through the door," Jenkins said. "The animal appears to have climbed or otherwise leaped out of the enclosure."

The first attack happened right outside the Siberian's enclosure -- the victim died at the scene. A group of four officers came across his body when they entered the dark zoo grounds, Mannina said.

The second victim was about 300 yards away, in front of the Terrace Cafe. The man was sitting on the ground, blood running from gashes in his head and Tatiana sitting next to him.

The cat attacked the man again, Mannina said. The officers approached the tiger with their handguns. Tatiana moved in their direction and several of the officers fired, killing the animal.

Only then did they see the third victim, who had also been mauled.

Although no new visitors were let in after 5 p.m. Tuesday, the grounds had not been not scheduled to close until an hour later, and 20 to 25 people were still in the zoo when the attacks happened, zoo officials said. Employees and visitors were told to take shelter when zoo officials learned of the attacks.

"This is a tragic event for San Francisco," Fire Department spokesman Lt. Ken Smith said. "We pride ourselves in our zoo, and we pride ourselves in tourists coming and looking at our city."

There are five tigers at the zoo -- three Sumatrans and two Siberians. Officials initially worried that four tigers had escaped, but soon learned only Tatiana had escaped, Mannina said.

On Dec. 22, 2006, Tatiana reached through the cage's iron bars and grabbed a keeper, biting and mauling one of her arms and causing deep lacerations. The zoo's Lion House was temporarily closed during an investigation.

California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health blamed the zoo for the assault and imposed a $18,000 penalty. A medical claim filed against the city by the keeper was denied.

Last February, a 140-pound jaguar named Jorge killed a zookeeper at the Denver Zoo before being fatally shot. Zoo officials said later that the zookeeper had violated rules by opening the door to the animal's cage.

Mayor Gavin Newsom said in a statement he was deeply saddened by the latest attack and that a thorough investigation was under way.

After last year's attack, the zoo added customized steel mesh over the bars, built in a feeding shoot and increased the distance between the public and the cats.

Tatiana arrived at the San Francisco Zoo from the Denver Zoo a few years ago, with zoo officials hoping she would mate with a male tiger. Siberian tigers are classified as endangered and there are more than 600 of the animals living in captivity worldwide.

Aquatic Nissan

The Life Aquatic Nissan’s NV200 Concept Out Ahead of Tokyo

The NV200 concept is Nissan’s imaginative take on the seemingly evergreen ‘functional box’ design brief as a means to riff on the next generation of light commercial vehicle.

Ready to hit Tokyo with its tasty mix of utility and high-end styling, the NV200’s instant wow item is the storage area that conspicuously slides from the rear of the van. In the show car iteration, the storage area is filled with the tools of the trade for an ocean photographer (natch), replete with flipper cubbies and an editing desk.

The sliding rear compartment is designed to be customizable, housing a pod that can be changed as the needs of the owner shift. Mix and match trays and boxes can be arranged to suit any number of profession specific equipment.

Calling the exterior styling “substantial” and “rugged-looking” Nissan may be overlooking the sense of whimsy evoked by their forward looking van. Lego brick wheels and a floral theme (similar to styling on Citroen’s C-Cactus) add visual interest, without seeming especially substantial to us. Inside the NV, Nissan has created a rather elegant space, using the flashy green tones sparingly in concert with a rich wooden floor, and nicely simple seating.

Better than the light commercial vans of today perhaps, but how far can the interchangeable “pod” concept be taken? Weigh in with ‘comments’.

Using the FBI

The phone rings at FBI headquarters. "Hello?"

"I'm calling to report my neighbor. He is hiding marijuana inside his firewood."

"Thank you very much for the call sir," replied the dispatcher.

The next day, FBI agents sneak up on the neighbor's house. They search the shed where the firewood is kept.

Using axes, they bust open every piece of wood, but find no marijuana. They yell at the neighbor and leave.

The phone rings at the neighbor's house.

"Hey, Bill, did the FBI come?"

"Sure Did!"

"Did they chop your firewood?!"

"Yep!"

"Great, now it's your turn to call. I need my garden plowed!!"

The One Sunday

It was Palm Sunday, and the family's 6-year old son had to stay home from church because of strep throat. When the rest of the family returned home carrying palm branches, the little boy asked what they were for.

His mother explained, "People held them over Jesus' head as he walked by."

"Wouldn't you know it," the boy fumed. "The one Sunday I don't go to church, and Jesus shows up!"

Mother Of The Year

In a zoo in California , a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth.

The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve.

After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. The veter inarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The only orphans" that could be found quickly, were a litter of weaner pigs. The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around the mother tiger

Red Wagon

It was the day after Christmas at a church in San Francisco. Pastor Mike was looking at the nativity scene outside when he noticed the baby Jesus was missing from the figures.

Immediately, Pastor Mike turned towards the church to call the police. But as he was about to do so, he saw little Jimmy with a red wagon, and in the wagon was the figure of the little infant, Jesus.

Pastor Mike walked up to Jimmy and said, "Well, Jimmy, where did you get the little infant?"Jimmy replied, "I got him from the church."

"And why did you take him?"

With a sheepish smile, Jimmy said, "Well, about a week before Christmas I prayed to little Lord Jesus. I told him if he would bring me a red wagon for Christmas, I would give him a ride around the block in it."

How NORAD (The Santa Radar)Tracks Santa Claus

The NORAD Tracks Santa Web site is the form of a public relations program by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). For over fifty years on Christmas Eve NORAD has told stories of how their powerful tracking systems such as the Distant Early Warning Line (DEW Line) detected Santa Claus leaving the North Pole to deliver his presents. This happens every year.

Official NORAD Santa Tracker Website (multi-lingual) & official hotline: 1-877-HI-NORAD

History

In 1955, a Colorado Springs-based Sears store ran an advertisement encouraging children to call Santa Claus on a special telephone hotline. Due to a printing error, the phone number that was printed was the hotline for the Director of Operations at the Continental Air Defense (CONAD). Colonel Harry Shoup took the first Santa call on Christmas Eve of 1955 from a six-year old boy who began reciting his Christmas list. Shoup didn't find the call funny, but after asking the mother of the second caller what was happening, then realizing the mistake that occurred, he instructed his staff to give Santa's position to any child who called in.

Three years later, the governments of the United States and Canada combined their national domestic air defenses into the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), but the tradition continued. Now major media outlets as well as children call in to inquire on Santa's location. NORAD relies on volunteers to help make Santa tracking possible. Many employees at Cheyenne Mountain and Peterson Air Force Base spend part of their Christmas Eve with their families and friends at NORAD's Santa Tracking Operations Center in order to answer phones and provide Santa updates to thousands of callers. About 800 service members and their families volunteer, and shift run from 2 a.m. MST December 24 to 2 a.m. Christmas morning.

In 1997, Canadian Major Jamie Robertson took over the program and expanded it to the Web where corporation-donated services have given the tradition global accessibility. In 2004, NORAD received more than 35,000 e-mails, 55,000 calls and 912 million hits on the Santa-tracking website from 181 countries. In 2005, more than 500 volunteers answered questions. The site now gets well over 1 billion hits.

The fictional background storyline has changed with the world political situation: during the Cold War when the tracking team provided updates via radio announcements, only North America was mentioned and Santa's approach was described in tense terms with interceptor aircraft scrambled to shoot down the "bogie." Only at the last minute would the pilot realize who he was engaging. Now the Web shows that as Santa approaches Newfoundland, a flight of Canadian Air Force fighters (CF-18 Hornets as of 2006) rendezvouses with him to provide an honor guard and ensure that he has no difficulty with the various Air Defense Identification Zones (ADIZ) he must enter.

In 2005 holiday season marked the fiftieth anniversary of NORAD's annual tracking of Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.

In 2006, NORAD Tracks Santa began using Microsoft Virtual Earth-style maps that instantly provide Santa's current location.

In 2007, NORAD Tracks Santa will begin using Google Earth to track Santa Claus in 3-D. They will also instantly provide Santa's location.

Hourly updates

The Web site is updated each hour to show a CGI-rendered Santa flying over one or more major cities in the time zone where it is midnight. These are viewable as videos which also include a voiceover from a member of NORAD staff (usually; on the 2005 (and 2006 due to the voiceovers being re-used) site, the video showing him over London had a voiceover by well known British celebrity Jonathan Ross, and 2004 had former Beatle Ringo Starr), explaining his location along with various facts about Santa and the country his is visiting.

In 2006, the videos described Santa

1. taking off from the North Pole and proceeding south along the International Date Line
2. visiting Auckland, Picton, and Cloudy Bay, New Zealand
3. passing over the Sydney Opera House as he enters Australia
4. passing Fuji-san and a 500 series Shinkansen "bullet train" in Japan
5. flying along the Great Wall of China and into Siberia
6. crossing the Hump (the Himalayas in Nepal)
7. passing the Taj Mahal in India
8. climbing to an altitude of some 240 miles (385 kilometers) to visit the International Space Station
9. admiring the "onion dome" architecture of Moscow (though passing through quickly, because the Eastern Orthodox Church prefer to give presents on Epiphany)
10. passing the Egyptian Pyramids and the Sphinx heading toward Cairo[19]
11. covering Italy while admiring the Colosseum in Rome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the canals of Venic
12. traveling north over the castles of Bavaria and into the rest of Germany
13. circling the Eiffel Tower in Paris
14. leaving North Africa and the Canary Islands for London (announced by Jonathan Ross of the BBC)
15. rendezvousing in mid-Atlantic Ocean with an unidentified Ohio-class submarine
16. coming into Rio de Janeiro past Cristo Redentor
17. touring Machu Picchu
18. entering the United States Northern Command by transiting up the coast of Florida past Kennedy Space Center
19. delivering to New York City while admiring the Statue of Liberty and Central Park before continuing into Quebec
20. flying through the Gateway Arch at St. Louis
21. pausing in Manitoba at Reindeer Lake
22. passing over NORAD's Cheyenne Mountain Operation Center before continuing to Alberta and Saskatchewan
23. orbiting Seattle's Space Needle and proceeding to California
24. finishing his mission at Hawaii

Notably, most of the videos posted on the 2006 site are the same ones (both in visuals and voiceover) as the ones posted on the 2005 site. Previous years have used the same visuals, but different voiceovers.

In 2004

1. Lifting off from the North Pole
2. visiting Auckland, Picton, and Cloudy Bay, New Zealand
3. Visiting Sydney, Australia
4. Japan
5. Visiting the Great Wall of China
6. Visiting the Himalayas Mountains in Nepal
7. Visitng India and the Taj Mahal
8. Santa visitng the Persian Gulf
9. Santa visiting Russia
10. Santa visiting Egypt and the International Space Station
11. Visiting Greece and flying over the olympic stadium
12. Visiting the Coliseum
13. Visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris
14. Beatle celebrity Ringo Starr tells us about Santa in England
15. Santa in the Atlantic Ocean
16. Santa in Brazil passing Christ the Redeemer
17. Santa in Canada then heading to South
18. Santa delivering gifts in Maine
19. Santa in New York
20. Santa in St. Louis
21. Santa in Manitoba
22. Santa in Colorado Springs
23. Santa in Seattle
24. santa ends his mission in Hawaii

NORAD Account of Tracking

NORAD details its fictional tracking system:

Detecting Santa all starts with the NORAD radar system called the North Warning System. This powerful radar system has 47 installations strung across the northern border of North America. NORAD makes a point of checking the radar closely for indications of Santa Claus leaving the North Pole on Christmas Eve.

The moment our radar tells us that Santa has lifted off, we use our second mode of detection, the same satellites that we use in providing warning of possible missile launches aimed at North America. These satellites are located in a geo-synchronous orbit (that's a cool phrase meaning that the satellite is always fixed over the same spot on the Earth) at 22,300 miles above the Earth. The satellites have infrared sensors, meaning they can detect heat. When a rocket or missile is launched, a tremendous amount of heat is produced - enough for the satellites to detect. Rudolph's nose gives off an infrared signature similar to a missile launch. The satellites can detect Rudolph's bright red nose with practically no problem. With so many years of experience, NORAD has become good at tracking aircraft entering North America, detecting worldwide missile launches and tracking the progress of Santa, thanks to Rudolph.

The third detection system we use is the Santa Cam. We began using it in 1998 - the year we put our Santa Tracking program on the Internet. NORAD Santa Cams are ultra-cool high-tech high-speed digital cameras that are pre-positioned at many places around the world. NORAD only uses these cameras once a year - Christmas Eve. The cameras capture images of Santa and the Reindeer as they make their journey around the world. We immediately download the images on to our web site for people around the world to see. Santa Cams produce both video and still images.

The fourth detection system we use is the NORAD jet fighter. Canadian NORAD fighter pilots, flying the CF-18, take off out of Newfoundland to intercept and welcome Santa to North America. Then at numerous locations in Canada other CF-18 fighter pilots escort Santa. While in the United States, American NORAD fighter pilots in either the F-15 or F-16 get the thrill of flying with Santa and the famous Reindeer Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph. About a dozen NORAD fighters in Canada and the United States are equipped with Santa Cams.

Corporate Sponsorship

The WHOIS lookup for noradsanta.org indicates that domain is owned by Analytical Graphics, Inc. In 2006, NORAD officials specifically thanked Island Web Studios, America Online, Akamai, Analytical Graphics, Globelink Language and Cultural Services, Qwest Communications, Verizon, and Microsoft Virtual Earth for help with the program[1]. In 2007, the primary sponsorship is Qwest Communications and Google Corp.

The End is Near

A priest and pastor from the local parishes are standing by the side of the road holding up a sign that reads, "The End is Near! Turn yourself around now before it's too late!"

They planned to hold up the sign to each passing car.

"Leave us alone you religious nuts!" yelled the first driver as he sped by.

From around the curve they heard screeching tires and a big splash. "Do you think," said one clergy to the other, "we should just put up a sign that says 'Bridge Out' instead?"

Tiger tears man's hand off

Jayprakash Bezbaruah, 50, was mauled to death on wednesday afternoon by two tigers who also ripped off his left arm as his wife and sons watched in horror.

The family had arrived in Guwahati today from Sivasagar, 355-360km away, for a holiday.

Digital camera in hand, Bezbaruah sneaked past the first barrier where wife Rita and their two school-going sons stood with a relative and other visitors crowding Assam State Zoo at 2.10pm. He wanted a close shot of the tigress Divya sunning herself.

The junior technical instructor reached the tigers’ enclosure a metre away and then made the second, fatal, mistake: of stretching his hands holding the camera through the iron railings.

Govardana, a second tiger that he hadn’t seen lurking near the enclosure wall directly below him, grabbed Bezbaruah’s left arm. In no time, Divya joined the attack, sinking its teeth into his arm and clawing his face.

Visitors raised an alarm and zoo-keeper Bapukon Baishya rushed to try and beat back the tigers with a stick. But they let go only when Bezbaruah’s arm was ripped off from the shoulder. “Although Divya slackened the grip when I intervened, Govardana did not budge and got away with the hand,” Baishya later said.

Bezbaruah was rushed to Gauhati Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Rita was hysterical. “Oh, God… this is unbelievable,” she screamed as the doctors said her husband had died of excessive bleeding and shock.

Back at the zoo, visitors were witness to the macabre sight of Govardana pacing around the enclosure with the severed arm in its mouth. The tiger later ate it up, zoo sources said.

Zoo veterinarian M.L. Smith said seven-year-old Govardana, like other male tigers, was “very aggressive” and had even killed and eaten its own cub a few months ago.

Divisional forest officer Narayan Mahanta, who took the victim to hospital, said: “Bezbaruah made the grave mistake of crossing the first barricade. Then he went too near the main enclosure.”

Sudangshu Mishra, a visitor from Nagpur, said he had learnt a lesson today: “Never try to fool around with a wild animal.”

Another visitor, Prashanta Gogoi, claimed the zoo staff had told Bezbaruah not to cross the first barricade, which is where visitors are expected to stop.

A boy who was witness to the attack, Lalit Lahkar, said the victim “probably did not notice the other tiger, which was near the wall inside the enclosure”.

As soon as the tiger caught hold of Bezbaruah’s arm, Lalit said, he raised an alarm. “I shouted ‘tiger, tiger’ and a zoo-keeper who was nearby rushed in and tried to chase away the animals with his stick,” the boy said.

The zoo has nine Royal Bengal Tigers. Five of a family are kept in one enclosure, Govardana and Divya are in an adjacent enclosure and the two remaining tigers in a third enclosure.

Govardana and Divya were brought to the state zoo in 2005 from Karnataka, Smith said. Divya turned five today.

The Bezbaruahs belong to Jorhat, about 300km from Guwahati, and Jayprakash worked at a technical institute in Sivasagar which is about 55km from their hometown.

A great article on CGI and this UFO:
http://www.rense.com/general77/haiti.htm

This is one of a series of videos that hit the Internet in mid-2007, all of them showing UFOs over various cities around the world, including Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic:

They're digital creations which, according to the Los Angeles Times, were put together by someone identified only as "Barzolff" in connection with a feature film project:
The 35-year-old Barzolff is a professional animator who attended one of the most prestigious art schools in France and has a decade of experience with computer graphics and commercial animation.

It took Barzolff a total of 17 hours to make both the Haiti and Dominican Republic videos. He did it all by himself using a MacBook Pro and a
suite of commercially available 3-D animation programs, including Vue 6. The videos are 100% computer-generated.

The videos, he said, were intended as research for a feature film project he's been working on with Partizan, the France-based production company responsible for, among others, Michel Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."

When contacted to verify the story, "Eternal Sunshine" producer Georges Bermann said it was all true, and that Barzolff was "an absolute genius" who could "make anything look entirely real."

To prove that he was truly behind the videos, Barzolff agreed to provide the L.A. Times with a new spacecraft video. Called "Proof," the video depicts a small version of one of the spacecraft floating above a Paris street. As the camera pans over, the viewer sees two elderly women at a cafe. One of whom is holding a remote control device. Humorously, of course, this video makes use of computer graphics as well.

The movie Barzolff is working on for the big screen is about two guys who create a UFO hoax so realistic that it spirals out of their control. "For better or worse," said Barzolff, who cited being "overwhelmed" by the response to his video as one of the reasons he didn't want to go public with his name.

Barzolff stressed the videos were not intended as a viral marketing ploy. His movie is still in the idea phase, and he created the hoax strictly as a "sociological experiment" — in other words, just to see what would happen.

In case you are totally stuck, we are available at http://klueless3.blogspot.com/

Hints

  1. Look for clickable objects on the page, within text, even within pictures.
  2. In case a text box is provided the answer must be written there and submitted.
  3. The answers are not case sensitive. However it could have more than one words, so don't forget to include spaces if required.
  4. Use Wikipedia or Google wherever you think you need it. Most levels anyway require some amount of both.
  5. Look closely at the pictures on the levels, if any, to find clues or hints. But don't be bound by them. Some of these pics are there just because we want to show them off :-)
  6. The way to get to the next level for certain levels after getting the password/clue may be to change a word/term in the URL (the http:// thing in the address bar of your browser). Most often than not, it's the last part: '.asp', and most likely refers to images. All such URLs will use only lowercase letters.
  7. Some amount of binary (.doc, .jpg etc.) download/manipulation may be required to get the hint to next level.
  8. You may find additional clues in the properties (author, comments etc.) of downloaded files.
  9. Not everything that looks like a hint may point to the right answer/path. We would like to play with your mind once in a while you know :-)
  10. A minimum screen resolution of 1024x768 is recommended for best experience

Enjoy!!!

Worlds Second Highest Roof top Restaurant : Sirocco Restaurant

A reader informs us that these days when the elevators open at Sirocco Restaurant, a group of six attendants seem to be screening out potential customers. A new rule poster is nearby with many conditions that prohibit people from entering the restaurant, such as wearing sandals or short-sleeved t-shirts. Also no bare midriffs allowed and no backpacks or rucksacks allowed ("for security reasons"). No children under five ("for safety reasons"). It seems that many customers are turned away for vague reasons in apparent attempt to keep the restaurant's clientele upscale and prevent the restaurant from becoming an overcrowded tourist attraction.
The restaurant has become so popularized recently that backpackers and many others show up for a drink at the overcrowded bar area just to see the view. It also appears that the Sirocco website has been taken off-line.

Testing for Development-Archetypes

Nobody can deny that the goal of software development is to produce the highest quality product possible. The only way to ensure that quality is through extensive testing.

Therefore, the following testing programs will be implemented as additions to the regularly scheduled regression testing:

Aggression Testing: Punching all developers with an open bug.

Confession Testing: All developers must admit what they either cannot do or have blown off.

Digression Testing: Developers and analysts must change the subject and ramble when the topic of bugs comes up.

Repression Testing: All developers must tell everyone who they secretly want to kill.

Oppression Testing: All developers will be required to work 24 hours a day until all bugs are fixed.

Depression Testing: All developers must explain which bugs make them sad, and why.

Succession Testing: Developers must be able to name the chain of command in the event that a PM dies.

Hessian Testing: QA will be redone by German mercenaries.

Joe Pescian Testing: All functions to be tested by a hot-headed Mafioso.

Please see your PM to get your testing schedule.

You looked a lot like my wife

A serious drunk walked into a bar and, after staring for some time at the only woman seated at the bar, walked over to her and kissed her. She jumped up and slapped him silly.

He immediately apologized and explained, "I'm sorry. I thought you were my wife. You look exactly like her."

"Why you worthless, insufferable, wretched, no good drunk!" she screamed.

"Funny," he muttered, "you even sound exactly like her."

Johnny Sokko and his Giant Flying Robot : The Kids Science fiction TV serial

For a kid in India in the '80s, there wasn't much choice as to what to watch on TV.
We had only doordarshan(The Indian national channel). You could count the number of kids'
shows on your fingers. One of the most popular of these shows was an old '60s Japanese series
called Giant Robot. Its Actual name was Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot.

Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot was a Japanese Live action show from Toei productions.
The English dubbed version was written by Reuben Guberman and produced by Salvatore Billitteri, both who worked on the Prince Planet series. Bobbie Byers was the voice of Johnny Sokko (and Prince Planet). Manuel San Fernando directed the series and was released in the U.S through American International Television in 1969. It aired in Australia in 1973 – 1974. Two Adelaide fans George Sclauzero and Kelly Lannanremember it screening there over the XMAS period at 8am on Earlybirds weekdays, hosted by Jane Reilly. It aired in other parts of Australia around the same time.

The series begins with the splashdown of a flying saucer in the Pacific Ocean. On board is the evil Emperor Guillotine from the planet Gargoyle; his plans to conquer the Earth. Authorities are led to believe that the saucer is destroyed on impact into the ocean. During this time Johnny Sokko – a boy with shorts, long white socks and a jacket (a daggy look!) and Gerry Monno, a unicorn agent pretending to be a writer, meet each other on board a cruise liner, when out of the ocean depths comes one of Guillotine's monsters – DRACOLON.

Johnny and Gerry jump over board before the ship is destroyed and wash up on a remote island, captured and taken prisoners in an underground lab. They get away and find a huge 100ft robot underground. The robot is the invention of Dr Lucious Guardian, forced to make the robot by the Gargoyle gang to help Guillotine conquer the world. The robot just finished now only needs atomic power to activate his brain and a voice pattern to command it.
Whoever talks first into the miniature transmitter in the form of a fob watch will control the Giant Robot.

The Doctor plants an atomic bomb to destroy the Gargoyle gangs headquarters and the robot so it cannot be used for evil. The Doctor fights off the gang while Johnny and Gerry escape before the explosion, but the Giant Robot survives, his brain activated by the atomic explosion and is under the control of Johnny who is the first to talk into the miniature transmitter.
Giant Robot is the name Johnny uses. It is a mechanical giant which follows Johnny’s commands. It has jet propulsion and an egyptian pharoah looking head.

Under Guillotines orders the Gargoyle gang and their leader ‘Spider’ instruct the Dracolan to attack and destroy Tokyo, but Johnny and Gerry fly to the rescue on the palm of the hand of the Giant Robot with the command "Giant Robot, Destroy Dracolon". Rocket missiles come out of his fingers, destroying Dracolon, but they will face the Gargoyle gang again.

Some of the other monsters the Giant Robot defeats throughout the series include the Two headed monster, Tentaclon an electric monster, Drakulun the vampire monster and Opticon - a giant eyeball with tentacles.

After defeating a whole batch of monsters by Guillotine and defeating them all, Giant Robot finally battles with Guillotine himself. The robot has used up all his nuclear energy and has no strength left. Guillotine increases his size to that of the robots, but his body is a mass of atomic energy. If a bullet hits him, his body will explode and the entire Earth will explode with him. Johnny activates Giant Robots auxillary power source and fights Guillotine. He disobeys Johnny’s commands to stop attacking and flies into Space with Guillotine colliding with
a meteor and destroying them both. Johnny Sokko breaks down into tears and as Johnny, Gerry and the rest of the
Unicorn Agency salute the Giant Robot we are left with the words
" And so the saga comes to an end Giant Robot sacrificed himself to save the
Earth from the terrible Guillotine but who knows when Johnny desperately needs
him again, perhaps like a miracle he will come back out of the sky"

Piranha

While my third-grade class was completing a writing exercise, one of the students asked me how to spell "piranha."

I told him I was unsure. To my delight, he went to the dictionary to solve his problem.

That's when I overheard another pupil say to him, "Why bother to look it up? She doesn't know how to spell it anyway."

No Pets Allowed

Two buddies were out one Saturday, walking their dogs. One had a Doberman Pinscher and the other had a Chihuahua. As they sauntered down the street, the guy with the Doberman said, "Let's go over to that restaurant and get something to eat."

The guy with the Chihuahua said, "We can't go in there. We've got dogs with us."

The one with the Doberman said, "Just follow my lead." They walked over to the restaurant and the guy with the Doberman put on a pair of dark glasses and started to walk in.

The bouncer at the door said, "Sorry, Mac, no pets allowed."

The man with the Doberman said, "You don't understand. This is my seeing-eye dog."

The bouncer said, "A Doberman pinscher?"

The man said, "Yes, they're using them now. They're very good."

The bouncer let him in.

His buddy with the Chihuahua put on his pair of dark glasses and started to walk in.

Once again the bouncer said, "Sorry, pal, no pets allowed."

The man with the Chihuahua said, "You don't understand. This is my seeing-eye dog."

The bouncer said, "A Chihuahua?"

The man exclaimed, "A Chihuahua? They g
